Adonay Adonay

Hebrew: אֲדֹנָי (adhonay)

Translation: Lord, Master

Key Scriptures (hover for pop-up): Genesis 15:2, 18:27; Joshua 7:8; 2 Samuel 7:18–20; Psalm 16:2, 27:1, 109:21, 110:1; Isaiah 6:1

Greek Septuagint (LXX): Κύριος (Kyrios)

Notes: Adonay is the emphatic form of ’āḏôn: reserved for God; reverential title; a divine name, translated "Lord", and signifying, from its derivation, "sovereignty". Its vowels are found in the Massoretic Text with the unpronounceable tetragrammaton YHWH; and when the Hebrew reader came to these letters, he always substituted in pronunciation the word "adhonay" as its vowels combined with the tetragrammaton form the word "Yahweh".
