Dominus

Dominus

Translation: “Lord”

Background: Dominus was used primarily as an imperial title during the era of the Roman Empire and was also the Latin title of the feudal lords. The Latin Vulgate follows Jewish tradition, substituting Dominus for the Tetragrammaton (YHWH).

Key Scriptures (hover for pop-up): Psalm 8:9 O LORD, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth! ; 103:1 BLESS the LORD, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name! ; 145:1 I WILL extol You, my God, O King; And I will bless Your name forever and ever. ; Philippians 2:11 ...and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Notes: Dominus is the liturgical backbone of Latin Christianity and is embedded in Western prayers such as Non nobis Domine, non nobis sed nomine Tuo da glorium (not to us Lord, not to us but to Your name be the glory).
