apophatic

Apophatic

Definition: A theological method that describes God by negation—what He is not. Also called “negative theology.”

Key Scriptures (hover for pop-up): 1 Timothy 6:16 who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power. Amen.

Theological Use: Apophatic theology emphasizes God's transcendence. We say God is “invisible,” “immortal,” “incomprehensible”—acknowledging the limits of human language.

Pastoral Note: Apophatic reverence guards against overconfidence. It invites awe, silence, and worship before mystery.
